Gary Oglander

Gary Oglander, Nashville, TN

“Colors and shapes of nature direct my marks and composition. The work conveys this in a spontaneous organic way. I love the physical act of painting and the laying down of color and texture. There is a moment of magic when this combination of elements becomes visually compelling. I then let the painting direct my actions. I'm moved by location, weather and my general perspectives of the world around me."      -Gary Oglander

Gary studied theater and film at Goddard College in Vermont, and then moved to Florida for work.

Gary’s paintings have a free-form sense of risk. His paintings are washes of organic color with a milky succulence, accented with his binary dashes of black to achieve a perfect balance and composition. He will add many layers only to begin again, leaving behind a topography of paint that gives depth and texture to the paintings. He has been painting now for thirty years, and his work is part of the permanent collection at the Tennessee State Museum as well as gracing the walls of the Presidential Suite at the Opryland Hotel. Gary also teaches art in his home studio, his students ranging from beginners to accomplished painters.

Eva Marie Pappas and Gary Oglander are partners in life and love.
